What images work best

The Tomodachi Life Palette House canvas is 256×256 cells with an 84-colour palette. The conversion always works — but some sources translate better than others.

✅ Works great

  • Bold logos and brand marks
  • Anime / chibi character portraits
  • Sanrio & cute character art
  • Pokémon sprites (already pixel art)
  • Cartoon food illustrations
  • Pet portraits (head-on, plain background)
  • Selfies with strong lighting

⚠️ Needs care

  • Photos with busy backgrounds — crop first
  • Group photos — pick one person
  • Gradient-heavy art — use Floyd–Steinberg
  • Low-contrast images — boost contrast slider
  • Wide horizontal logos — crop to a square

❌ Doesn’t work well

  • Smooth 3D renders
  • Photos of soups, stews, blurry textures
  • Logos with intricate fine text
  • Crowded scenes (weddings, panoramas)
  • Heavily painted illustrations with subtle hues

Supported formats, privacy, and how the conversion works.

How do I convert an image to pixel art for Tomodachi Life?
Drop a PNG or JPG into the tool below, or paste a direct image URL. Pick a style preset (Detailed / Balanced / Retro / Chunky), choose a dithering algorithm, and the tool quantises every cell to the Palette House palette. Export the result as a PNG or a printable recipe card.
Does it convert PNG, JPG, WebP, and SVG?
PNG, JPG, and WebP work directly. SVG support depends on your browser — most modern browsers rasterise SVGs into canvas without issue. GIFs convert their first frame.
Is my image uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using HTML5 Canvas — your image never leaves your device. The only exception is the optional CORS proxy used when loading URLs from hosts that block direct cross-origin requests, and even then the proxy only sees the URL, not your output.
Can I share my converted pixel art with someone?
Yes — the tool offers a "Copy share link" button. If you loaded the image from a URL, the link recipient sees the exact same conversion. If you uploaded from disk, the link encodes your settings (style, dither, brightness, etc.) so the recipient just needs to load their own image to apply the same recipe.
What's the difference between this and the Grid Maker?
The Grid Maker is paint-by-numbers focused — simple controls, recipe card output. The Image to Pixel Art converter (and the underlying Pixel Art Maker) is style-focused: multiple dithering algorithms, edge enhance, saturation. Use the Grid Maker when you want a clear recipe; use this when you want aesthetic control.
