Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream doesn't use MBTI — but it might as well. The game's personality system runs on four two-sided trait axes that produce 16 distinct personality combinations, exactly the same shape as the Myers-Briggs system. That's why "which MBTI is my Mii?" is one of the most-asked questions in the community, and why recreating yourself on your island feels so natural once you know the mapping.
This guide gives you the full correspondence: how each game axis lines up with an MBTI letter pair, a chart mapping all 16 in-game personalities to their closest MBTI type, slider settings for building a Mii from any MBTI type, and how MBTI-style pairings play out in the game's compatibility system. (One honest caveat up front: this is a fan-made "closest equivalent" mapping, not an official Nintendo or Myers-Briggs correspondence — details below.)
How the game's axes map to MBTI letters
Tomodachi Life scores every Mii on Movement, Speech, Behaviour, and Attitude. Each axis lines up surprisingly cleanly with one MBTI letter pair:
Speech Reserved ↔ Confident
How readily the Mii speaks up and initiates conversation — the closest thing in the game to introversion vs. extraversion. Reserved = I, Confident = E.
Attitude Down-to-earth ↔ Quirky
Practical and grounded vs. eccentric and imaginative — a near-perfect match for sensing vs. intuition. Down-to-earth = S, Quirky = N.
Behaviour Independent ↔ Cooperative
Self-sufficient and task-focused vs. people-seeking and harmony-focused — the behavioural face of thinking vs. feeling. Independent = T, Cooperative = F.
Movement Calm ↔ Energetic
Steady and settled vs. spontaneous and always in motion — the loosest of the four mappings, but it tracks judging vs. perceiving well enough. Calm = J, Energetic = P.
Because each axis maps to exactly one letter pair, every one of the game's 16 personality combinations lands on a unique MBTI type — no doubling up, no leftovers.
The Tomodachi Life MBTI chart — all 16 types
Read your Mii's four trait positions from their in-game profile, find the matching row, and you have their MBTI type. Or start from your own MBTI and read the row backwards to get the slider settings.

How each type shows up on the island:
- ISTJ — Quiet observer. Methodical, keeps to themselves, values routine — textbook ISTJ energy.
- INTJ — Mysterious daydreamer. Solitary, unusual inner world, quietly plotting.
- ISFJ — Supportive friend. Gentle, dependable, always there for their neighbours.
- INFJ — Gentle eccentric. Soft-spoken but deeply imaginative — the island's quiet idealist.
- ESTJ — Authoritative loner. Direct, practical, runs their own show.
- ENTJ — Visionary recluse. Big ideas delivered with total confidence, on their own terms.
- ESFJ — Steady leader. The social glue of the apartment building.
- ENFJ — Charismatic creative. Warm, expressive, pulls other Miis into their orbit.
- ISTP — Restless worker. Always busy, rarely talks about it.
- INTP — Solo adventurer. Off exploring some odd corner of the island, alone and happy.
- ISFP — Helpful doer. Quietly pitches in wherever another Mii needs a hand.
- INFP — Curious sidekick. Sweet, whimsical, tags along on everyone's adventures.
- ESTP — Driven achiever. Fast-moving, loud, gets things done solo.
- ENTP — Wild original. Unpredictable, argumentative in the fun way, one of a kind.
- ESFP — Popular organiser. The Mii who shows up at every event and knows everyone.
- ENFP — Chaotic life-of-party. Maximum energy, maximum weirdness, universally loved.
Build a Mii that matches your MBTI
To recreate yourself (or a friend, or a character with a well-known MBTI type) on your island, translate the four letters into slider positions at Mii creation:
- First letter (I/E) → Speech slider. I types toward Reserved, E types toward Confident. Push it further for strongly expressed types.
- Second letter (S/N) → Attitude slider. S types toward Down-to-earth, N types toward Quirky.
- Third letter (T/F) → Behaviour slider. T types toward Independent, F types toward Cooperative.
- Fourth letter (J/P) → Movement slider. J types toward Calm, P types toward Energetic.
Keep sliders near the middle for a mild version of the type, or push them to the ends for the full caricature. If the Mii doesn't behave the way you pictured, traits are adjustable afterwards from their profile — our personality chart guide covers every axis in depth, and the 100 Mii ideas list has plenty of characters to type and build.
MBTI compatibility in Tomodachi Life
Here's where the mapping gets genuinely useful. In-game compatibility is dominated by the Behaviour and Attitude axes — which in MBTI terms means the middle two letters matter most:
- Shared middle letters = fast friends. An INFP and an ENFJ (both _NF_) share Cooperative behaviour and Quirky attitude — they'll bond quickly regardless of the outer letters.
- Opposite middle letters = friction. An ISTJ paired with an ENFP flips both heavy axes at once — the hardest pairing in the game. Expect stalled friendships and failed confessions.
- Outer letters barely matter. I/E (Speech) and J/P (Movement) shape how a relationship feels — lively or quiet — but rarely whether it works. An introvert-extravert couple is fine as long as the middle letters line up.
Before you invest hours steering two Miis together, run the pairing through the free Personality Matcher — it scores the same four axes with the same weighting and tells you in 30 seconds whether a confession is likely to land.
What this mapping is (and isn't)
Two honest caveats. First, this correspondence is fan-made — Nintendo has never published an MBTI mapping, and the game's axes describe observable behaviour (how a Mii moves and talks) while MBTI claims to measure cognitive preferences. The structures rhyme; the underlying meanings differ. Second, MBTI is a trademark of The Myers & Briggs Foundation, which has no affiliation with this site or with Nintendo. Treat the chart as a fun, practical translation layer for building and pairing Miis — not as a personality assessment.
Put the chart to work
The fastest next step: pick your MBTI row from the chart, build the Mii with the matching sliders, then open the Personality Matcher and score them against the Mii you want them to befriend — or marry. For the game's personality system on its own terms (no MBTI lens), the Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream personality chart goes axis by axis.
