Tomodachi Life personality chart — complete guide

The four-axis personality system explained, all 16 combinations described, compatibility patterns for pairing Miis, and a free interactive matcher to score any two Miis. Updated for Living the Dream on Switch and Switch 2.

Every Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Mii is shaped by four personality traits, set when you create them and adjustable afterwards. These traits decide how the Mii moves, talks, behaves, and reacts to events — and crucially, who they get along with. Most player frustration with Mii relationships ("why won't they be friends?") traces back to mismatched personalities, not bad luck.

This guide covers the system end-to-end: the four trait axes, the 16 personality combinations they produce, compatibility patterns for picking friends and partners, and a step-by-step walkthrough for choosing traits intentionally rather than randomly. For instant scoring of any two Miis, our free Personality Matcher takes 30 seconds to run.

The four personality axes

Tomodachi Life's personality system uses four independent axes. Each Mii sits somewhere along each axis. Pick the position carefully — most behaviours you'll see from the Mii trace back to one of these four settings.

01

Movement

Calm ↔ Energetic. Controls how actively the Mii moves around the island, their animation speed, and how often they wander between buildings on their own.

  • Very calm: Slow movements, contemplative, stays in one place longer
  • Balanced: Average speed, mixes between active and resting
  • Very energetic: Quick movements, frequently visits other Miis, bouncy idle animations
02

Speech

Reserved ↔ Confident. Affects how loudly the Mii talks, how often they initiate conversations, and their general comfort speaking up around other Miis.

  • Very reserved: Soft-spoken, waits for others to start conversations
  • Balanced: Talks when there's something to say
  • Very confident: Loud, expressive, starts most conversations
03

Behaviour

Independent ↔ Cooperative. Determines how much the Mii prefers solo activity versus group activity. Independent Miis are happier alone; cooperative Miis seek out company.

  • Very independent: Prefers solo activities, comfortable on their own
  • Balanced: Comfortable in both modes
  • Very cooperative: Always seeks groups, struggles with extended alone time
04

Attitude

Down-to-earth ↔ Quirky. Shapes the Mii's worldview — practical and pragmatic at one end, eccentric and imaginative at the other. Affects which events the Mii enjoys.

  • Very down-to-earth: Practical, sensible, comfortable with routine
  • Balanced: Mix of practical and creative
  • Very quirky: Eccentric, imaginative, drawn to unusual situations

The 16 personality combinations

With four axes and two main directions on each (plus the middle balanced state), the system produces 16 distinct combination archetypes at the extremes — the personalities most discussions of Tomodachi Life refer to. Below is a compact chart of all 16, with a one-line description of how each tends to behave.

Compatibility patterns

Two Miis don't have to share all four axes to get along — they just need to overlap in the right places. Three rules of thumb after observing hundreds of community-shared pairings:

1. Shared Behaviour axis matters most for friendship

Two cooperative Miis form bonds quickly; two independent Miis respect each other's space and become friends gradually. But one cooperative + one independent Mii often miscommunicate — the cooperative one feels neglected, the independent one feels crowded. If you want two Miis to be friends, match their Behaviour axis.

2. Mismatched Attitude is the biggest deal-breaker

A very down-to-earth Mii paired with a very quirky Mii is the hardest compatibility to make work. The down-to-earth Mii finds the quirky one exhausting; the quirky one finds the down-to-earth one boring. Match Attitude — or at least keep both Miis in the middle of the axis.

3. Movement and Speech can differ freely

An energetic Mii and a calm Mii can still pair beautifully, as long as Behaviour and Attitude line up. Same for confident + reserved. These two axes mostly affect how the Mii presents itself, not the underlying compatibility.

How to pick a personality intentionally

The Mii creation screen lets you set traits with sliders. Most players randomise. Three steps for picking on purpose:

  1. Decide the archetype first. Look at the table above and pick the row that matches the character you have in mind — or invent your own combination.
  2. Pair Behaviour and Attitude carefully. These two axes drive 80% of compatibility. Pick them with intent.
  3. Test with the Personality Matcher. Before creating two Miis you want to pair, score them in the matcher to confirm compatibility.

Adjusting a Mii's personality later

If a Mii isn't behaving the way you pictured, you can adjust their personality from the in-game menu. The trait sliders return to the same axes you set during creation. Adjustments take effect immediately — the Mii's animations, speech speed, and decision patterns shift to match.

Be careful: changing personality after a Mii has formed relationships can disrupt them. If a friendship was built on shared Behaviour, flipping that axis can introduce friction. Adjust before significant relationship development if possible.

Use the chart in practice

The fastest way to apply this is to open the Personality Matcher, drop in two Miis you're considering pairing, and score the result. The tool walks the same logic as this article but in 30 seconds rather than 14 minutes.

Personality chart · FAQ

Common questions about the four axes, the 16 types, and how compatibility works.

How many personality types are there in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream?
Tomodachi Life uses a four-axis personality system. Each axis has multiple gradations, producing 16 distinct personality "types" at the combination level. The four axes — Movement, Speech, Behaviour and Attitude — are set when you first create the Mii and shape how they act, talk and interact with other Miis on your island.
What are the four personality axes?
The four axes are: Movement (how energetically the Mii moves around the island), Speech (how confidently they talk), Behaviour (how independent versus cooperative they are), and Attitude (how quirky versus down-to-earth their outlook is). Each axis is set on a scale you select during Mii creation.
Can I change a Mii's personality after creating them?
Yes. Personality traits can be adjusted after Mii creation through the in-game personality menu. This is useful if a Mii's behaviour doesn't match what you originally pictured for them, or if you want to pair them with a specific other Mii whose compatibility depends on a tweak.
What personality types make compatible couples?
In general, Miis with similar values on 3 out of 4 axes tend to form the strongest friendships and romantic compatibility. Pairs with extreme differences on all four axes have the hardest time clicking, though "opposites attract" pairings do occasionally work. Use our free Mii Personality Matcher to score any pairing instantly.
Is the Tomodachi Life personality chart the same as MBTI?
No. The MBTI personality system uses four axes but they're different concepts (introvert/extrovert, sensing/intuition, thinking/feeling, judging/perceiving). Tomodachi Life's axes are: movement, speech, behaviour, and attitude. The structures look similar — both produce 16 combinations — but the underlying meanings are different.
How do I check a Mii's personality?
Open the Mii's profile from the apartment building. The personality section shows the trait positions on each of the four axes and a summary descriptor combining them. This is also where you can adjust the traits if a Mii isn't behaving the way you want.
